Educators take action: Speak out to protect students and public schools

Transcript

Hello, NEA. My name is Jillian Buzzard. I'm an aspiring educator from Nebraska. I am here in Washington, D.C. this week to talk to our legislators about protecting all of our students and to protect all of our public schools. As a former public school graduate, I understand the detriment that this will have on our public schools across this country. One reason that I am specifically here is I am a current student teacher, and I have the joy of 23 students in my classroom ages 7 and 8. Last week, I had a girl who was 7 come to class on Tuesday, and she had missed Monday. And I asked her on Tuesday, I said, why weren't you here yesterday? Just, you know, not being nosy, but just wondering. And she said, well, my dad might be going back to Mexico soon. My family, we are Mexicans, and the president, Donald Trump, does not like Mexicans. So trying to take the weight off the situation, I simply asked her, like, oh, what did you do yesterday with your dad? And she told me we ate a bag of chips and played some board games. This is reality, friends. This is the reality of our classrooms across this nation. And I'm urging our legislators to protect all of our students, no matter their background. Thank you.
